I've always been partial to the Hellboy films and the scene that inspired this piece has to be one of my favorites. Without the dedication of Rick Baker, we may not have had such an poignant image. The viewer's willingness to not only accept the reality of a red creature with ground-down horns, but share in his immense, rain-soaked sorrow is testament to Baker's masterful skill.
This digital painting was done for Monster Maker at Hero Complex Gallery, a tribute show to artist and effects guru, Rick Baker. I created each component from the ground up with the amazing brushes of Kyle T. Webster. Prints available here.
Hellboy, the rosary (which I found is an Anglican rosary and not a Catholic in case you cared), and this old 'photo' were created separately and combined. I loved painting this photo, making it look old, so much fun!
